Dr. Raika Khorshidian

Georg Forster Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Bonn, focusing on contemporary art, displacement and identity.

Research profile

Raika Khorshidian (Georg Forster Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Bonn) is an art scholar, lecturer, critic, and independent curator. Her postdoctoral research project “From National to Transnational Art: Displacement, Identity, and Belonging in Iranian Contemporary Art” explores the transformation of Iranian artists' identities through analysis of their œuvres and (auto)biographies. The project concentrates on four main concepts: place, estrangement, displacement, and multiple belonging. In 2023, she co-organized with Prof. Dr. Birgit Mersmann the international workshop “Collective Traumas and Future Fantasies: The Power of (Visual) Art for Social and Political Transition in Iran” at the University of Bonn. The main topics of the workshop included protest art/art activism and art-based disobedience in the “Women, Life, Freedom” movement; the role of social media as a medium for art-political activism; art against propaganda; and art-historical studies of social change and political transition, particularly in relation to future fantasies. Besides, she co-curated two exhibitions: “Kannst du mich hören? (Can you hear me?)” at Galerie Gublia, Essen, and “Here / There” at Brotfabrik, Bonn. These exhibitions are part of a larger ongoing interdisciplinary curatorial project that aims at reviewing artworks and narratives of artists as subtle yet profound agents of social change. Its objective is to amplify silenced voices muted by political oppression and cultural misunderstandings. In this stage of the project, the focus is on female Iranian artists whose creations narrate the background of “Woman, Life, Freedom” delving into collective traumas. From 2018 to 2021, Khorshidian worked as a critic, researcher, curator, and artist manager exploring experiences of estrangement and belonging surrounding Iranian identity at Tehran-based art galleries. In addition to participating in group exhibitions as an artist, she served as a jury member for art competitions and an independent art journalist, publishing critiques and exhibition reviews with a focus on unhomely aesthetics. Whilst studying for her PhD at Tarbiat Modares University in Iran from 2015 to 2018, she also worked as a research assistant, conducting cross-cultural art-based research into hybrid art and identity in Brazil, China, Japan and different provinces of Iran. From 2014 to 2016, she worked as thesis advisor on master’s theses at the University of Tabriz and the University of Art in Tehran, focusing on accessory and jewellery design for activism and feminism. In addition, she taught on the topics of Iranian art history and design history, and on design and critique courses as a visiting lecturer at Amirkabir University of Technology (Polytechnic) and Pars University in Tehran. In 2015, she worked as a design manager at the Museum of Zoroastrians’ History and Culture. In her master thesis, she studied participatory fashion design, focusing on improving creative and activist skills among Iranian women despite constraints and limitations, and a portion of her project was selected as a finalist in Denmark’s 2011 Index (Design to Improve Life Award).
